alkin Model 1

This is a watch I have had my eye on from the first time I saw some renders online. I’m fortunate enough to have been loaned a prototype for review. This is the alkin model 1. It enters the ring via Kickstarter and it is coming out swinging! It’s packing serious value in a classically stylish and functional design, that somehow manages to boast ruggedness, durability and functionality, all while remaining devilishly handsome.

The creator of the model 1 is a furniture maker. As you would imagine functionality and durability are important to him and that clearly shows in this design. It’s case is a sensible 42mm and it is classically round. It’s a respectable 50mm lug to lug. The brushed stainless steel is tough and well finished and sits 13.5mm high off the wrist. The 22mm lug width is a great choice, offering many options for after market straps because this Watch is going to be a strap monster! It’s gonna look great wearing anything. I have been so impressed with the versatility of this time piece. It goes well in any outfit and any occasion.

The dial is matte black and not cluttered by too much writing, just the company name below 12 o’clock and automatic written above 6 o’clock. It has applied markers painted with enough BGW9 superluminova to make it glow all through the night and every hour is written, 1 through 12 with minute markers marked all the way around the dial. The skeletonized sword hands look fantastic and touch the indices accurately. My only issue with the hands is that because they aren’t solid down the middle the lume stops glowing on them long before the lume on the indices. However it is one of the most legible useable watches I’ve worn.

It is also a very useable piece. It’s an obvious go to watch. No date window makes it easy and quick to set, and as I said it really matches to almost every outfit very nicely. It is water resistant to 100 meters and the crown is screwed down to reassure you of that. The domed sapphire with its 2 coatings of AR will shrug off scratches and offer a lovely distortion at an angle. The 4 o’clock crown placement not only makes it comfortable but gives it a tough ready for adventure look.

The movement is the proven and affordable Seiko NH35 work horse. It will last you ages and if you need it repaired, regulated or replaced it will be easy and not cost you much. The watch is designed to last and I really approve of this choice. My only other gripe is the display case back. The NH35 isn’t much to look at and while the rotor has the brand name engraved on it that doesn’t change the fact that it is an undecorated movement. I would have preferred an engraved solid SS backing. But not that it matters because how much time are you looking at the back of the watch.

Now finally here is the absolute best part. This watch is available right now on Kickstarter for the equivalent of less than $250 USD!!!! That makes this an absolute no brainer. Buy it for yourself, buy one for your friend, buy one for the fact that it’s the most versatile watch period! It is offered in the brushed SS version and a black PVD as well. And if you are fast there is a limited edition blue dial that is really charming but there will only be 50 of those, so pause your reading here, Click this link. go order one then come back and look at the pictures more closely.
